Diesel Vs Petrol: Which To go for in 2020
Fuel and fuel economy are some of the most rapidly developing areas in the automotive world as far as our cars go. It’s a great thing to be able to see, with every single year bringing something new to the table. With all of this awesome innovation going on though, it does bring forward a huge question for a lot of us. Diesel vs petrol, and what is going to be the better fuel choice for you.
There’s no one size fits all answer here either, which only makes matters worse. Everyone’s driving habits are different, and depending on what car you have, what you use it for and even how you use it all has a huge impact on your fuel. (That’s fuel economy in a nutshell).
To make the right call, you need to know the whole story
Diesel Pros
A good place to start with all of this is looking at diesel. If you do a lot of driving, this is one of the most commonly used fuel types due to one massive factor.
Slow Usage
Diesel engines have one huge advantage over just about any other fuel type you can ask for, and that’s how long a tank can last. You can almost always get more miles out of diesel than you can with petrol, and if you’re going to be doing a lot of driving, that can have a huge impact on how much you’ll spend on fuel!
Diesel Cons
For such a huge pro, it’s only fair that diesel must have some cons to go alongside it. That’s the only reason that not everyone uses it after all if it lasts that long in the tank. Will diesels get banned.
Price
The first one is what brings everything in the balance and that’s the price of diesel. It costs a lot more than other fuels do, and although it lasts longer, if you’re a wasteful driver, it may not be the thing for you. It’s a potential deal-breaker.
Tax & Environment
If you’re a big supporter of the environment like so many of us are in modern society, this is a biggie. Diesel is not a good fuel for the environment. In fact, it’s so bad that it’s actually being discontinued across a lot of countries in Europe like the UK. That’s impractical for you and your car tax.
Petrol Pros
The other side of the coin in the petrol vs diesel argument comes from the benefits of petrol. It’s the most common fuel type for a reason after all.
Cheaper
On top of the opposite of all of the diesel cons, it has to be said that the price difference in petrol vs diesel cars is huge. It’s so much cheaper to buy petrol than it is diesel that it’s crazy. It opens a load of doors on that fact alone.
Availability
On top of that, it’s also important to note that diesel engines are almost always for much larger cars than petrol has to offer. It’s rare to impossible to find a small engine diesel car on the road, and that alone limits your options massively. If you do a lot of city driving, that can be a huge downside and cost you more on fuel too, even despite the increased fuel economy.
Petrol Cons
Finally, to make all of this full circle, the cons of petrol need to be mentioned too. It’s only fair to fight both corners, so let’s get into it and finish the battle once and for all.
Usage
Just like diesel is amazingly long in life when it’s in the tank, petrol is usually quite the opposite in comparison. As technology is developing, this is becoming more and more irrelevant, but it’s still a factor for older vehicles. Chances are, you’ll use more petrol. If you’re motorway driving, that will cost you a fair amount of money eventually!
Petrol Vs Diesel: The Winner
So who wins in this? Well, In all honesty, neither. If it had to be one, it would be petrol for how it’s evolving and having such a brighter future.
If you really want to get with the times and futureproof your driving, this is where hybrids and electric cars are coming into a league of their own, but that’s another topic entirely. Thinking going green.
Think about what is going to suit your needs best, and work from there. Just remember though, the clock is ticking!
