The Atkinson cycle changes the timing of the intake valve in a four-stroke petrol engine. Instead of closing the valve when the piston reaches the bottom of the intake stroke, the valve stays open slightly longer. As the piston starts to compress the air-fuel mixture, some of it flows back into the intake manifold.
